Two women are in critical condition after a BMW smashed into the rear of a dump truck at a high speed on Route 12 in Wauconda Friday afternoon.

The Wauconda Police Department and Wauconda Fire District responded around 1:35 p.m. Friday to the area of Route 12 south of Case Road for a vehicle crash with injuries.

A red BMW 325i and a blue Mack dump truck pulling a trailer with a bulldozer were involved in the crash, according to Wauconda Police Department Public Information Officer Heather Cognac.

A preliminary investigation showed that the Mack dump truck was pulling out from a private drive in the 29000 block of Route 12.

Cognac said that the driver of the BMW, for unknown reasons, crashed into the rear of the Mack truck and trailer at a high rate of speed, witnesses reported to police.

The BMW was driven by a woman and had a woman in the passenger seat. Both occupants were transported by ambulances to Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville.

Cognac said that both victims are in critical condition. A 69-year-old man driving the Mack truck was uninjured.

Northbound Route 12 was completely closed at North Old Rand Road and southbound Route 12 was down to one lane at Case Road for the investigation.

The Major Crash Assistance Team (MCAT) is assisting the Wauconda Police Department with the investigation, which is ongoing.
