A Vernon Hills man punched a police officer in the face as officers tried to arrest the man for breaking property at an apartment building in Libertyville, authorities said.
Gennadiy S. Zakharov, 54, of the 1-99 block of Parkside Court in Vernon Hills, was charged with aggravated battery to a police officer, criminal damage to property and criminal trespass to real property.
The Libertyville Police Department responded around 8:09 a.m. September 8 to the 100 block of East Cook Avenue for a damage to property report.
The 911 caller reported that a subject was seen on video damaging property in the apartment building common area.
Officers located the suspect, identified Zakharov, who was still on the property, according to Libertyville Police Department Sgt. Jason Kapusinski.
While Zakharov was being placed under arrest, he resisted officers and struck an officer in the face with a closed fist, Kapusinski said.
Zakharov was transported to the hospital to receive medical care and issued a trespass warning for the property where the incident occurred.
Charges against the man for battering a police officer were pending review with the Lake County State’s Attorney’s Office.
Police officers were called again to the same apartment building around 11:54 a.m. September 17 after Zakharov returned to the property in violation of the trespass warning, Kapusinski said.
Officers responded and located Zahkarov in the area. He was placed under arrest without incident.
Zakharov was transported to the Libertyville Police Department where he was processed, cited and transported to the Lake County jail. He has since been released on bond.
