A Lake County sheriff’s deputy was transported to the hospital after a three-vehicle crash near Mundelein Friday evening, authorities said.

The incident occurred around 6:30 p.m. Friday on Route 83 near Creekwood Drive in unincorporated Mundelein.

Lake County Sheriff Spokesman Sgt. Christopher Covelli said that a vehicle traveling northbound was stopped waiting to turn left into a driveway.

Traffic behind the vehicle was stopped and the driver of a northbound Jeep Liberty did not stop as it approached the traffic.

The female driver swerved into the southbound lanes, first striking a Ford Mustang in front of her.

The woman’s Jeep then struck a sheriff’s deputy’s squad car which was traveling southbound on Route 83 north of Creekwood Drive.

Covelli said that the deputy sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was transported by Mundelein Fire Department to Advocate Condell Medical Center.

No one else involved in the crash was injured.

The crash was located in the jurisdiction of the Lake County Sheriff’s Office but since it involved one of their deputies, the Mundelein Police Department handled the investigation, Covelli said.

The female driver of the Jeep was cited for improper lane usage and failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident.

“Fortunately, he [the deputy] wasn’t seriously injured, and nobody else was injured in the crash. Please remember to always keep your eyes on the road and don’t drive distracted!” the sheriff’s office said on social media.
