A Crystal Lake man was charged with raping a woman, who is a family member of his, in Crystal Lake in August, according to court documents.

Cristhiam F. Espinal, 39, of the 600 block of Elsinoor Lane in Crystal Lake, was charged with criminal sexual assault, a Class 1 felony, criminal sexual abuse, a Class 4 felony, and domestic battery with physical contact, a Class A misdemeanor.

A criminal complaint filed in McHenry County court alleges Espinal sexually penetrated a woman, who was unable to give consent, and made oral and manual contact with the victim’s genitalia.

The complaint said that the victim is a family member of Espinal. The assault occurred on August 2, according to court records.

The Crystal Lake Police Department investigated the incident and a judge signed a warrant for Espinal’s arrest on Thursday.

Police arrested the man the same day the warrant was issued. Espinal remains held in the McHenry County jail on a $150,000 bond.

If the man is able to post the $15,000 required to be released, he will have to surrender all firearms to police and will not be allowed to have any contact with the victim, records show. He would also have to surrender his passport.

Espinal is scheduled to appear in court on Tuesday for a bond hearing and to set the date for a preliminary hearing.
