DCFS was notified after police say a Highland Park mother drove drunk with her children in the car and crashed into another vehicle near Huntley Tuesday evening.

The McHenry County Sheriff’s Office and Huntley Fire Protection District responded around 6:35 p.m. Tuesday to the intersection of Route 47 and Foster Road in unincorporated Huntley for a vehicle crash with injuries.

Deputies located two vehicles involved, a 2014 Ford Escape and a 2007 Toyota Tacoma, according to the McHenry County Sheriff’s Office.

An investigation indicated the Ford, driven by Melissa E. Sanchez, 37, of Highland Park, was traveling southbound on Route 47.

The Ford crashed into the rear of the Toyota, driven by a 23-year-old Union man, which was stopped in traffic attempting to turn eastbound onto Foster Road.

Sanchez, who police said was intoxicated, was transported to Northwestern Medicine Huntley Hospital with minor injuries.

Her two children, who were in child restraints, were evaluated by paramedics and later turned over to a family member, the sheriff’s office said.

The driver of the Toyota was evaluated by paramedics and refused further medical treatment.

The road was shut down for a short period of time while first responders worked the scene. The Lakewood Police Department and Huntley Police Department also assisted at the scene.

Sanchez was charged with driving under the influence of alcohol, two counts of child endangerment, failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident, illegal transportation of alcohol and failure to notify of an address change.

The Department of Children and Family Services (DCFS) was notified of the incident, police added.
