A 76-year-old man was struck and killed by a vehicle as he tried to cross the street to his driveway Wednesday evening in Beach Park, the sheriff said.

The Lake County Sheriff’s Office and Beach Park Fire Department responded around 7 p.m. Wednesday to the area of Green Bay Road and Waldo Avenue for a report of a vehicle that struck a pedestrian.

Deputies arrived and found the victim, a 76-year-old Beach Park man, unconscious north of the intersection.

The pedestrian had significant injuries as a result of the crash, Lake County Sheriff Spokesman Sgt. Christopher Covelli said.

Paramedics arrived soon after the first-responding sheriff’s deputies and transported the man to Vista Medical Center East in Waukegan. He was pronounced dead a short time later.

A preliminary investigation shows a 2003 Cadillac Seville, driven by a 23-year-old Beach Park woman, was traveling northbound on Green Bay Road just north of Waldo Avenue.

According to witnesses, the pedestrian was attempting to cross the street from the west side of the roadway to his driveway, which was on the east side of the roadway, Covelli said.

As he crossed, he was struck by the northbound Cadillac. The Lake County Coroner’s Office was notified and is in the process of scheduling an autopsy.

The crash remains under investigation by the Lake County Sheriff’s Office Technical Crash Investigations Unit.
