A 47-year-old woman who was sitting in a car in North Chicago was fatally shot and killed by a gunman who pulled up next to her in a vehicle, police said.
The North Chicago Police Department was alerted to a gunshot victim who was driven to their police station around 12:15 a.m. Sunday.
Police officers arrived and found a 47-year-old woman with gunshot wounds in the front passenger seat of a vehicle.
Lake County Major Crime Task Force Spokesman Christopher Covelli said that a preliminary investigation shows the woman was with a male acquaintance.
The two were in a vehicle parked in the 1500 block of Lincoln Street. Lincoln Street in this area is one-way for southbound traffic only.
The woman was in the front passenger seat and the man was in the driverโs seat.
As the two were in their vehicle, another vehicle drove past them and parked directly in front of them, Covelli said.
An occupant inside that vehicle pulled a gun and shot several times at the victimโs vehicle.
The female was struck by gunfire but the driver was not shot. The offending vehicle then fled from the scene.
The man drove directly to the North Chicago Police Department, which was nearby the scene, to seek help for the woman, Covelli said. The woman sustained significant injuries and was pronounced dead.
The Lake County Coronerโs Office responded to the scene and an autopsy has been scheduled for Tuesday.
