A man and woman who tried robbing a convenience store at gunpoint in Round Lake Beach were shot by the store clerk late Monday evening, police said.
The Round Lake Beach Police Department responded around 10:47 p.m. Monday to the One Stop Food and Liquor, 1015 North Fairfield Road in Round Lake Beach, for a report of an armed robbery.
Officers learned that a female suspect and a male suspect entered the business and ordered the employees behind the counter at gunpoint.
During the robbery, one of the employees was able to access a firearm and shot several rounds at the suspects, striking both of them.
The suspects fled the store into a waiting vehicle, which fled the area northbound on Fairfield Road.
Officers located the suspect vehicle near Clinton Avenue and Fairfield Road in Round Lake Heights after it tried fleeing down a dead-end road.
The driver and front passenger fled on foot from the car and left both injured suspects behind in the car.
The male and female suspects were taken to Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville. Their condition was not immediately available, police said.
A perimeter was set up and a canine unit was called in to assist in the search for the driver and front passenger. They were not located.
The incident remains under investigation by the Round Lake Beach Police Department.
