One suspect is in custody and two others are being sought after a pickup truck and sedan assisted in stealing a bank ATM in Round Lake before fleeing from police and crashing.

The Round Lake Police Department responded around 2:30 a.m. Thursday to 1271 Route 134 in Round Lake for a theft in progress.

Police learned that a pickup truck was attempting to steal a bank ATM, according to Round Lake Deputy Police Chief David Prus.

The truck fled the scene westbound pulling the ATM with a chain while a white sedan followed the truck.

Officers found the ATM lying in the roadway near Town Center Road and Fox Trail in Round Lake.

Officers also located the truck unoccupied in the vicinity and moments later saw the white sedan, which was occupied by three subjects, in the immediate area of the truck.

The sedan fled from officers and ultimately crashed off the roadway into a condo building in the 500 block of Fox Trail.

The three occupants fled the vehicle into a marsh area. A multi-jurisdictional perimeter, consisting of officers from numerous area police departments, was established.

Lake County Sheriff’s Canine Dax and his handler John Forlenza responded to the scene to conduct a track.

Dax located the male driver of the sedan hiding in the marsh area and he was taken into custody.

The male driver remains in the custody of the Round Lake Police Department pending further investigation, Prus said. The other two occupants in the vehicle have not been located at this time.
