A police officer suffered injuries and was transported to the hospital after a driver crashed their pickup truck into his squad car in Waukegan Friday afternoon.
The Waukegan Police Department said a Waukegan police officer was in his marked squad car on westbound Grand Avenue just east of Lewis Avenue.
The officer was stopped in traffic around 12 p.m. Friday and a 2007 Chevrolet Colorado pickup truck was traveling eastbound on Grand Avenue, according to Waukegan Police Cmdr. Edgar Navarro.
The Chevrolet, driven by Martha Morales, 74, of Waukegan, lost control of the vehicle and struck the driver’s side of the police car.
The police officer, a male in his 40s with 20 years of police service, was transported by ambulance to an area hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
The marked squad car was a 2020 Chevrolet Tahoe and had to be towed due to its damage.
Navarro said the female driver of the Chevrolet was not injured. Both drivers were wearing their seatbelts and the officer is expected to make a full recovery.
Morales was cited with improper lane usage, failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident and driving with unsafe tires. Morales will appear in traffic court on February 22.
