A man who shot himself in the head in McHenry was flown to the hospital and is expected to survive. It is unclear if the shooting was accidental or intentional.

The McHenry Police Department and McHenry Township Fire Protection District responded around 2 p.m. Wednesday to the Hillcrest Apartment Complex in the 1900 block of North Orleans Drive for a 911 call.

According to preliminary police radio traffic, officers found a victim who suffered a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head. He was conscious and breathing.

McHenry Deputy Police Chief Thomas Walsh said that the victim, a 38-year-old male, called 911 following the shooting.

Paramedics transported the man by ambulance to Northwestern Medicine McHenry Hospital.

A LifeNet medical helicopter then flew the man to Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville for treatment. His injury does not appear to be life-threatening, Walsh said.

“While this incident is still under investigation, it is known that it was isolated to that residence and there is no danger to the public,” Walsh said.
