The coroner’s office has identified an 18-year-old Round Lake Beach man killed during a high-speed crash near Grayslake that left his car torn to pieces.

An autopsy showed that Diego Estrada, 18, of Round Lake Beach, died as a result of multiple traumatic injuries during a vehicle crash, according to Lake County Coroner Jennifer Banek.

The Lake County Sheriff’s Office and Grayslake Fire Protection District responded around 9:05 a.m. Wednesday to Rollins Road east of Drury Lane in Avon Township near Grayslake for a vehicle crash with injuries.

Sheriff’s deputies arrived and found two vehicles involved, one with severe damage, according to Lake County Sheriff Spokesman Lt. Christopher Covelli.

A preliminary investigation shows a 2004 Subaru WRX, driven by Estrada, was traveling westbound on Rollins Road.

“Based on the damage at the scene, it appears the driver of the Subaru was traveling at a high rate of speed,” Covelli said.

Estrada lost control of the vehicle and began to slide. The Subaru struck an eastbound 2008 Toyota Tundra, driven by a 36-year-old McHenry man.

The Subaru caught fire near the engine compartment following the crash and firefighters extinguished it.

Estrada was wearing a seatbelt but due to the impact and damage to the vehicle, he was ejected, Covelli said.

Estrada was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the Toyota was uninjured.

Police said that the man was traveling at a high rate of speed and detectives are working to determine how fast he was going.

The crash remains under investigation by the Lake County Sheriff’s Office Technical Crash Investigations Unit and Lake County Coroner’s Office.
