A Lake Forest woman was killed after she was struck by a Metra train late Friday evening in Highwood, authorities said.

The Highland Park Fire Department, Highwood Police Department and Highland Park Police Department responded around 10:30 p.m. Friday to Highwood Avenue and Green Bay Road.

Authorities received a 911 call reporting a person had been struck by a train in the area.

Emergency crews searched the area and minutes later found a woman on the Metra Union Pacific North line tracks just north of Highwood Avenue.

Paramedics pronounced the woman dead at the scene and the Lake County Coroner’s Office was called.

All inbound and outbound Metra trains were halted for several hours during the investigation, causing extensive delays, according to Metra.

Lake County Coroner Jennifer Banek said that the victim was identified as a 53-year-old woman from Lake Forest.

An autopsy is pending and the woman’s name is being withheld pending notification to family, Banek said.

The Metra Police Department also responded to the scene and is leading the investigation, according to Highwood Police Chief David Wentz.

The Metra Police Department has not responded to requests for comment as of Saturday afternoon. It is unclear if the death was a suicide or accidental.
