The coroner’s office has identified a Lake Forest woman who was killed after being struck by a Metra train Friday evening in Highwood.

An autopsy showed Kristin Avellone, 53, of Lake Forest, died as a result of severe blunt force injuries caused by a train collision, according to Lake County Coroner Jennifer Banek.

The Highland Park Fire Department, Highwood Police Department and Highland Park Police Department responded around 10:30 p.m. Friday to Highwood Avenue and Green Bay Road.

Authorities received a 911 call reporting a person had been struck by a train in the area.

Emergency crews searched the area and minutes later found a woman on the Metra Union Pacific North line tracks just north of Highwood Avenue.

Paramedics pronounced the woman, later identified as Avellone, dead at the scene and the Lake County Coroner’s Office was called.

All inbound and outbound Metra trains were halted for several hours during the investigation, causing extensive delays, according to Metra.

The Metra Police Department also responded to the scene and is leading the investigation, according to Highwood Police Chief David Wentz.

The Metra Police Department has not responded to requests for comment as of Saturday afternoon. It is unclear if the death was a suicide or accidental.

The incident remains under investigation by the Lake County Coroner’s Office and Metra Police Department.
