Police are asking for the public’s help in locating a black Ford Explorer with heavy damage that fled the scene in Round Lake Beach after hitting and killing a man on Saturday.
The Round Lake Beach Police Department and Greater Round Lake Fire Protection District responded around 6:34 a.m. Saturday to Route 83 and Fox Chase Drive.
Dispatchers received a 911 call to check on the well-being of a person found lying in a ditch line on Route 83 near the intersection, police said.
Officers arrived and located an unresponsive male on the west side of the roadway with several pieces of vehicle debris around him.
Paramedics from Greater Round Lake Fire Protection District responded and pronounced the man dead at the scene a short time later.
The Lake County Major Crash Assistance Team (MCAT) was called to assist the Round Lake Beach Police Department with the investigation.
Police said they believe a vehicle struck the man and fled the scene. Investigators identified the vehicle as a black 2011-2014 Ford Explorer, similar to the image provided above.
Round Lake Beach Deputy Police Chief Wayne Wilde said Saturday evening that the vehicle is missing the passenger side mirror and the vehicle has extensive front passenger side damage.
The Lake County Coroner’s Office also responded to the scene and has scheduled an autopsy on the man for Monday.
Anyone who spots the vehicle is asked to call 911 or if they have information to call their local law enforcement agency, Wilde said.
