A Waukegan man and a Hainesville man, who were both in their 20s, died Saturday evening following a single-vehicle high-speed crash near Lindenhurst, police said.

The Lake County Sheriff’s Office and Gurnee Fire Department responded around 9:30 p.m. Saturday to Stearns School Road and Route 45 in Warren Township for a vehicle crash with injuries.

Sheriff’s deputies arrived and found a 2009 Audi TTS sedan with extreme damage, according to Lake County Sheriff Spokesman Lt. Christopher Covelli.

A preliminary investigation shows the Audi, driven by a 23-year-old Waukegan man, was traveling westbound on Stearns School Road at a high rate of speed.

The driver lost control of the vehicle and struck a guardrail on the north side of the roadway, Covelli said.

A 23-year-old Hainesville man, who was in the passenger seat, was not wearing his seatbelt and was partially ejected during the crash.

The driver and passenger both sustained major injuries and were transported by ambulances to Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville.

Both men were pronounced dead and the Lake County Coroner’s Office was notified. Autopsies are being scheduled.

Eastbound Stearns School Road was blocked at Route 45 and Stearns School Road westbound at Hutchins Road was also blocked for several hours during the incident.

The crash remains under investigation by the Lake County Sheriff’s Office Technical Crash Investigations Unit.
