A 28-year-old man was critically injured and hospitalized after the car he was in struck the front of a Lake County snowplow truck in Zion Monday evening.
The Zion Fire-Rescue Department, Winthrop Harbor Fire Department and Zion Police Department responded around 5:30 p.m. Monday to the intersection of Green Bay Road and 9th Street in Zion.
Dispatchers received a 911 call reporting a vehicle crash involving an SUV and a Lake County Department of Transportation plow truck.
Firefighters arrived and found an SUV with heavy damage on Green Bay Road at 9th Street.
There were initial reports that the passenger of the SUV was trapped in the car but firefighters did not need to extricate the victim.
The Zion Police Department said that an investigation showed the snowplow truck was entering Green Bay Road from eastbound 9th Street.
The truck was struck on its plow by the SUV, which was traveling southbound on Green Bay Road, police said.
The front passenger of the SUV, a 28-year-old Winthrop Harbor man, sustained critical injuries and was transported to a local hospital for treatment.
The Lake County Major Crash Assistance Team (MCAT) responded to the scene to assist Zion Police Department accident investigators.
Green Bay Road was closed in both directions for several hours Monday evening while investigators worked at the scene. The crash remains under investigation.
