Authorities have identified a 24-year-old Gurnee man who was shot and killed while sitting in a vehicle at a gas station in Waukegan on Wednesday.
An autopsy showed that Daviontae Sims-Friar, 24, of Gurnee, died as a result of multiple gunshot wounds, according to Lake County Coroner Jennifer Banek.
The Waukegan Police Department and Waukegan Fire Department responded around 4:40 p.m. Wednesday to the Gas Stop gas station, 2720 Washington Street, for a report of shots fired.
Waukegan Police Department Cmdr. Edgar Navarro said that officers located a male victim, later identified as Sims-Friar, with gunshot wounds.
Paramedics from the Waukegan Fire Department arrived on the scene and transported Sims-Friar to Vista Medical Center East in Waukegan where he was pronounced dead.
The Waukegan Police Department Major Crime Scene Unit and Criminal Investigations Division both responded to the scene.
Investigators believe a suspect, described as a thin male Black, fired the shots at the victim’s vehicle and then the suspect got into a light-colored sedan and drove away.
The Sims-Friar’s vehicle appeared to be pulling into the gas station when it was shot at.
Navarro said that Sims-Friar was a Waukegan resident, but the Lake County Coroner’s Office said the man was actually from Gurnee.
Investigators called the shooting an “isolated incident.” The shooting remains under investigation by the Waukegan Police Department and Lake County Coroner’s Office.
