A Waukegan man in his early 20s was shot and killed while sitting in a vehicle at a gas station in Waukegan Wednesday afternoon, police said.
The Waukegan Police Department and Waukegan Fire Department responded around 4:40 p.m. Wednesday to the Gas Stop gas station, 2720 Washington Street, for a report of shots fired.
Waukegan Police Department Cmdr. Edgar Navarro said that officers located a male victim with gunshot wounds.
Paramedics from the Waukegan Fire Department arrived on the scene and transported the victim to an area hospital where he was pronounced dead.
The Waukegan Police Department Major Crime Scene Unit and Criminal Investigations Division both responded to the scene.
Investigators believe a suspect, described as a thin male Black, fired the shots at the victim’s vehicle and then the suspect got into a light-colored sedan and drove away.
The victim’s vehicle appeared to be pulling into the gas station when it was shot at.
Navarro said the victim is believed to be a Waukegan resident who was in his early 20s. Investigators called the shooting an “isolated incident.”
The Lake County Coroner’s Office responded to the scene and an autopsy has been scheduled for Thursday.
Once the autopsy has been completed and family notifications have been made, the victim’s identity will be released.
