A 48-year-old man from Ingleside was struck and killed by a freight train north of the Round Lake Metra Station early Wednesday morning, officials said.

The Greater Round Lake Fire Protection District and Round Lake Police Department responded around 1:43 a.m. Wednesday to the area near the Round Lake Metra Station, 334 Cedar Lake Road.

Emergency crews received a call of a pedestrian struck by a freight train half a mile north of the Metra train station along Route 134.

Police located the incident along Route 134 between Harrison Avenue and Hart Road. Paramedics pronounced a male victim dead at the scene.

The Metra Police Department and Lake County Sheriff’s Office were called to the scene to assist in the investigation.

The Lake County Coroner’s Office also responded to the scene and conducted an autopsy on the victim.

The coroner’s office identified the victim as Kirk Stateler, 48, of Ingleside. He died as a result of multiple blunt force injuries.

Delays to service were reported on Metra’s Milwaukee District North line.

Metra Train #2102 was scheduled to depart Fox Lake at 4:46 a.m. but was delayed due to the incident, according to Metra.

Metra said around 5:05 a.m. that Train #2102 was expected to resume service shortly.

The death remains under investigation by the Lake County Coroner’s Office and Metra Police Department.
