A Round Lake Beach man, who has a lengthy history of thefts and burglaries, was sentenced to four years in prison for burglarizing a vehicle in Crystal Lake.
Austin G. Deleon, 27, of the 1300 block of Maple Street in Round Lake Beach, was indicted on one count of burglary, a Class 3 felony.
McHenry County Judge Michael Coppedge found Deleon guilty of the charge during a bench trial in December.
Coppedge sentenced Deleon to four years in the Illinois Department of Corrections on Friday.
The Crystal Lake Police Department investigated a burglary to a vehicle that occurred near Regal Drive and Oak Hollow Road in Crystal Lake on July 23, 2018.
McHenry County Assistant State’s Attorney Ashur Youash said in a court document that Deleon entered a minivan with the intent to commit theft.
Officers photographed and collected fingerprints from the vehicle’s door handle and a tablet inside the vehicle.
The fingerprints were sent to the Illinois State Police Forensic Science Laboratory in Rockford where it was determined the fingerprints belonged to Deleon.
Youash said that Deleon six previous criminal cases against him for theft and burglary.
Those cases include a 2005 theft in McHenry County, 2009 theft in McHenry County, 2011 identity theft in Mundelein, 2012 theft in Round Lake Beach, 2014 burglary in Round Lake Beach, and 2018 theft in Round Lake Beach.
“The only lapse in criminality committed by this defendant over the past fifteen years [was] 2014 to 2018 when the defendant was incarcerated. Neither probation, nor public service work, nor short term prison sentences deterred this defendant from committing this burglary,” Youash said.
