A Cary man was arrested and charged in connection with an attempted robbery at an Island Lake gas station where he claimed he was armed with a gun.
Timothy J. Rands, 30, of the 300 block of Bryan Drive in Cary, was charged with one count of attempted aggravated robbery indicating armed with a firearm, a Class 2 felony.
The charges stem from an incident the Island Lake Police Department was called to at the Citgo gas station, 520 Newport Court, on April 6.
A criminal complaint filed in McHenry County Court alleges that Rands entered the gas station and verbally told the clerk he was armed with a firearm.
Rands demanded $200 from the store safe and register, the complaint said. It is unclear if Rands actually got away from the scene with the money or not.
Officers with the Island Lake Police Department arrested Rands the same day of the robbery around 10:30 a.m., court records show.
A McHenry County judge set his bond at $40,000, meaning he would need to post $4,000 cash in order to be released from custody.
A motion filed by Rands’ public defender, Angelo Mourelatos, argued that Rands is not a danger to the community and not a flight risk.
Mourelatos asked the court to reduce Rands’ bond to a personal recognizance bond.
Court documents show that a bond hearing was held on April 9 but Rands did not appear and waived his bond hearing.
Rands remains held in the McHenry County Jail and is scheduled to appear for a preliminary hearing on May 13.
