The sheriff’s office is warning farmers in McHenry County after several thefts of farm tractor GPS units in the area, officials said.

The McHenry County Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigation Division is investigating the thefts.

The sheriff’s office said that the suspect or suspects are specifically targeting John Deere Starfire GPS Receivers.

These GPS receivers were taken off of farm tractors that were parked in an unsecured area or left out in a field overnight, the sheriff’s office said.

It is unclear why these receivers are being specifically targeted. According to John Deere, the receivers start at around $4,000.

Police did not say how many of these thefts have occurred or where in McHenry County they occurred.

Authorities are reminding McHenry County farmers to secure their equipment in an area that is not easily accessible and out of sight from the road.
