State police say a man suffered life-threatening injuries after he crashed his car into a wall and then jumped from a bridge onto Interstate 90 near Huntley.

The Illinois State Police responded around 8:57 a.m. Saturday to Interstate 90 near milepost 46.75 for a report of a vehicle crash.

Illinois State Police Trooper Omoayena Williams said that District 15 troopers responded to a call of a single-vehicle crash with unknown injuries.

A preliminary report indicated that a silver 2020 Toyota Corolla was traveling eastbound on I-90 when it struck the wall.

Williams said that the male driver, who was the sole occupant, exited the vehicle following the collision and began walking eastbound from the scene.

As police were still responding to the scene, the driver jumped from the Powers Road bridge onto eastbound Interstate 90 approximately 20 minutes after the crash.

It is unclear what caused the man to jump from the bridge, but a 911 caller told dispatchers that the man had been driving recklessly before he crashed into the wall.

Just before he jumped from the bridge, multiple people called 911 reporting the man was attempting to cross all lanes of traffic and “was oblivious to the passing cars,” according to preliminary police radio traffic.

The Huntley Fire Protection District was called to the scene and paramedics transported the driver to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries.

All eastbound lanes were closed for approximately an hour. The investigation remains open and ongoing, Williams said.
