A Nevada man allegedly groomed a 12-year-old girl on social media platforms Snapchat and Omegle and then traveled to McHenry County where he sexually abused the girl, police said.
The Harvard Police Department responded around 4:33 p.m. Wednesday to the Baymont Inn, 1701 South Division Street in Harvard, for a report of a disturbance in the parking lot.
Harvard Deputy Police Chief Tyson Bauman said that Leonel E. Rivas-Martinez, 18, had solicited a 12-year-old Harvard girl through the social media platforms Snapchat and Omegle.
Rivas-Martinez, of the 1800 block of McCarran Street in North Las Vegas, Nevada, traveled to Illinois and met with the 12-year-old girl at the hotel.
Bauman said that Rivas-Martinez sexually abused the girl. A 30-year-old male family member of the victim discovered what happened and confronted Rivas-Martinez at the hotel.
The family member called police, who responded and arrested Rivas-Martinez.
He was subsequently charged with two counts of aggravated criminal sexual abuse, unlawful grooming, traveling to meet a minor child and one count of solicitation to meet a child.
Rivas-Martinez was transported to the McHenry County Jail where a judge ordered him held on a $50,000 bond.
Rivas-Martinez would need to post $5,000 cash in order to be released from the jail. A bond hearing is scheduled for Monday.
