Police are investigating after gunmen exited a vehicle and fired numerous shots at another car in the parking lot of a Waukegan gas station, officials said.

The Waukegan Police Department was called around 8:30 p.m. Monday to the Mobil gas station near Belvidere Road and Jackson Street for a report of a shooting.

Waukegan Deputy Police Chief Joe Florip told Lake and McHenry County Scanner that officers located a shot-up 2019 Honda CR-V.

The Honda, which was reported stolen out of Racine, Wisconsin, was in the parking lot of the gas station in front of X Comm Wireless.

A grey hatchback sedan pulled into the parking lot and an unknown number of occupants exited the sedan and began to shoot at the Honda, Florip said.

The occupants of the Honda ran from the vehicle on foot and the shooters got back into the sedan and fled the area.

Florip said that officers recovered numerous spent shell casings from the scene. A loaded semi-automatic handgun was also recovered in the Honda.

Witnesses only told police that the suspects were male blacks and a female black, Florip said. No one was injured in the shooting.

The number of shots fired and other details are not being released due to the investigation being “open and active,” Florip added.

Anyone with information on the shooting is asked to contact the Waukegan Police Department’s Gang Intelligence Unit at 847-856-6444.
