Police are asking witnesses to come forward after a 72-year-old man was killed by a high-speed reckless driver who crashed into his car in Fox Lake over the weekend.
An autopsy showed Stephen Kamen, 72, of Fontana-on-Geneva-Lake, Wisconsin, died from multiple blunt force injuries from a crash, according to Lake County Coroner Jennifer Banek.
The Fox Lake Police Department and Fox Lake Fire Protection District responded around 6 p.m. Saturday to Route 12 and Big Hollow Road in Fox Lake for a report of a multiple-vehicle crash with injuries.
Fox Lake Acting Police Chief Dawn Deservi said the crash involved five vehicles, which included a silver Infiniti SUV, silver GMC Acadia, red Dodge Caravan, black Toyota Solara, and brown Chevrolet pickup.
A preliminary investigation revealed that the silver Infiniti was traveling southbound on Route 12 and attempted to complete a right turn onto westbound Big Hollow Road, Deservi said.
Deservi said the Infiniti crossed into the eastbound lane of traffic on Big Hollow Road and struck the vehicles that were facing eastbound stopped for the red traffic light at Route 12.
Multiple witnesses told Lake and McHenry County Scanner the Infiniti SUV was traveling recklessly and at a high speed along with another vehicle southbound Route 12 before the crash.
Kamen, who was the driver of the silver GMC SUV, was pronounced dead at the scene, Deservi said.
A female passenger in the GMC was transported to Northwestern Medicine Hospital in McHenry with non-life-threatening injuries.
All occupants of the other vehicles involved were treated and released on scene by the Fox Lake Fire Protection District.
It is unclear if police have arrested the driver of the silver Infiniti SUV yet.
On Tuesday, the Fox Lake Police Department said they are seeking anyone who witnessed the crash or the events leading up to the crash to come forward.
Those with information can contact the police department at 847-587-3100.
The Major Crash Assistance Team of Lake County and the Lake County Coronerโs Office are assisting with the investigation.
