Oscar M. Sotelo-Nava, 33, of Winthrop Harbor.

A man wanted for shooting another man in Winthrop Harbor and trying to flee into Mexico has been extradited back to Lake County from Texas.

Oscar M. Sotelo-Nava, 33, of the 900 block of Landon Avenue in Winthrop Harbor, is facing charges of aggravated battery with a firearm, aggravated discharge of a firearm and aggravated battery causing great bodily harm.

The Winthrop Harbor Police Department and Winthrop Harbor Fire Department responded around 7:30 p.m. May 17 to Landon Avenue and 9th Street for a report of a shooting.

Winthrop Harbor Deputy Police Chief Edward Mohn said that a male offender shot another male adult in the leg with a pistol during an alleged business dispute.

The gunshot victim, who police say was the intended target, was found near the Mobil gas station at Sheridan Road and 9th Street.

The suspect was identified as Sotelo-Nava shortly after the shooting.

Mohn said that a multi-city regional search was initiated and evidence led investigators to believe that Sotelo-Nava had fled the state and was on the way to Mexico through the U.S. Southern Border.

Police worked with the United States Customs and Border Protection Agency in two different southern border stations to develop information on a possible crossing location for Sotelo-Nava.

U.S. border patrol officers located Sotelo-Nava on May 19 and arrested him at the Laredo, Texas border crossing, Mohn said.
