A 63-year-old man who sustained serious injuries last week after a van struck his motor scooter in Lake Zurich has died at the hospital, police said.

John Welbourn, 63, of Lake Zurich, was pronounced dead at Advocate Condell Medical Center, according to Lake Zurich Police Department Sgt. Colin Gaffney.

The Lake Zurich Police Department and Lake Zurich Fire Department responded around 5:26 p.m. Thursday to Buesching Road and Route 22 in Lake Zurich for a report of a serious crash with injuries.

Lake Zurich Police Chief Steve Husak said the incident involved a 2009 Honda van and a 2017 Wolf motor scooter.

A preliminary investigation showed the Honda was traveling northbound in the 0-100 block of Buesching Road.

The Honda attempted to turn left into a private drive when it struck the southbound motor scooter, Husak said.

Welbourn, who was driving the motor scooter, was thrown from the scooter and sustained life-threatening injuries.
