A man is in critical condition after police say he was traveling at a high rate of speed and crashed into a tree early Sunday morning in unincorporated Zion near the state line.
The Lake County Sheriff’s Office responded around 5:49 a.m. Sunday to Russell Road and Delany Road in unincorporated Zion for a single-vehicle crash.
Lake County Sheriff Chief of Staff Anthony Vega said that a passing motorist called 911 after witnessing a car lose control, leave the roadway and strike a tree.
A preliminary investigation found that a silver 2020 Toyota Camry, driven by a Kenosha, Wisconsin man, was traveling westbound on Russell Road at a high rate of speed, Vega said.
The driver veered off onto the gravel shoulder on the right, overcorrected and crossed the center line where he continued to travel southbound until he struck a large tree.
Deputies found the driver unconscious and paramedics transported him to Advocate Condell Medical Center in critical but stable condition.
Alcohol and excessive speed appear to be contributing factors, Vega said.
The investigation continues by the Lake County Sheriff’s Office Technical Crash Investigations Team.
