Melodie Gliniewicz, 56, of Antioch.

A Lake County judge has set the trial date for November for Melodie Gliniewicz, the wife of late Fox Lake Police Lt. Joe Gliniewicz, who is accused of helping her husband steal money from the police department.

Melodie Gliniewicz, 56, of the 38500 block of North Lakeside Place in Antioch, was charged in 2016 with multiple counts of unlawful use of charitable funds and money laundering.

Melodie Gliniewicz and her late husband, Joe Gliniewicz, allegedly stole thousands of dollars from the Fox Lake Police Department’s Explorer Post for personal expenses.

The theft occurred from September 2009 through September 2015, court records show.

Prosecutors previously said in court documents that the couple used the funds on hundreds of meals at restaurants, movie tickets, a vacation to Hawaii and other personal expenses.

Lt. Gliniewicz was found fatally shot in September 2015. Moments prior, he had radioed in to dispatch reporting he was in pursuit of three men.

A massive manhunt ensued after Gliniewicz’s death was initially believed to be a murder. Investigators later determined he actually had committed suicide.

Investigators later announced Gliniewicz attempted to cover up his death because he feared he was soon going to be caught misusing the explorer post’s funds.

The case against Melodie Gliniewicz had been delayed after a Lake County judge ruled in 2019 that text messages prosecutors obtained from Melodie Gliniewicz and her husband were not admissible at trial.

The ruling was appealed and the Second Appellate Court reversed the judge’s ruling in 2020.

During a Thursday court hearing, a Lake County judge scheduled a jury trial for November 15 after the trial had been pushed back multiple times.

A case management conference is scheduled in the meantime for July 27.
