Police say a death investigation was underway Thursday after a woman was found shot and killed in an unincorporated area of Crystal Lake.

The McHenry County Sheriff’s Office and Nunda Rural Fire Protection District responded around 5:15 a.m. Thursday to Riverside Drive and Lilly Court in unincorporated Crystal Lake.

According to preliminary police radio traffic, sheriff’s deputies received a call of shots fired in the area.

McHenry County Sheriff’s Deputy Tim Creighton said deputies arrived to find a 36-year-old woman who had been shot.

Sheriff’s deputies attempted to perform life-saving measures on the woman but she was pronounced dead at the scene, according to radio traffic.

Creighton said that a death investigation is ongoing but the incident was “isolated” and there are “no additional concerns for public safety.”

The McHenry County Sheriff’s Office asked boaters on social media Thursday morning to avoid the Fox River south of the Route 176 bridge near Burtons Bridge Beach due to the investigation.
