The coroner’s office has identified a 36-year-old woman who was found shot and killed on a beach area in unincorporated Crystal Lake early Thursday morning.

An autopsy showed that Megan Chamberlain, 36, of Crystal Lake, died from a fatal gunshot wound, according to the McHenry County Coroner’s Office.

The McHenry County Sheriff’s Office and Nunda Rural Fire Protection District responded around 5:15 a.m. Thursday to Riverside Drive and Lilly Court in unincorporated Crystal Lake.

According to preliminary police radio traffic, sheriff’s deputies received a call of shots fired in the area.

McHenry County Sheriff’s Deputy Tim Creighton said deputies arrived to find a woman, later identified as Chamberlain, who had been shot.

The McHenry County Coroner’s Office said the woman was found on the beach when deputies arrived.

Sheriff’s deputies attempted to perform life-saving measures on Chamberlain but she was pronounced dead at the scene, according to radio traffic.

Creighton said that a death investigation is ongoing but the incident was “isolated” and there are “no additional concerns for public safety.”

The McHenry County Sheriff’s Office asked boaters on social media Thursday morning to avoid the Fox River south of the Route 176 bridge near Burtons Bridge Beach due to the investigation.

Officials have not said if the death is being considered suicide or a homicide.

The incident remains under investigation by the McHenry County Coroner’s Office and McHenry County Sheriff’s Office.
