Authorities said that a man who went into Lake Michigan near the Waukegan Municipal Beach died after being rescued from the water early Sunday morning.

The Waukegan Fire Department and Waukegan Police Department responded around 12:00 a.m. Sunday to the Waukegan Yacht Club, 199 South Harbor Place in Waukegan, for a report of a drowning.

Witnesses reported that a man went into Lake Michigan just before midnight and had not resurfaced, according to preliminary fire department radio traffic.

Fire department divers deployed into the water and began searching for the victim.

The Mutual Aid Box Alarm System (MABAS) was activated to bring water rescue crews from fire departments throughout Lake County to the scene.
