Authorities said that a man who went into Lake Michigan near the Waukegan Municipal Beach died after being rescued from the water early Sunday morning.

The Waukegan Fire Department and Waukegan Police Department responded around 12:00 a.m. Sunday to the Waukegan Yacht Club, 199 South Harbor Place in Waukegan, for a report of a drowning.

Witnesses reported that a man went into Lake Michigan just before midnight and had not resurfaced, according to preliminary fire department radio traffic.

Fire department divers deployed into the water and began searching for the victim.

The Mutual Aid Box Alarm System (MABAS) was activated to bring water rescue crews from fire departments throughout Lake County to the scene.

Divers located the 35-year-old man by around 12:35 a.m. Sunday.

Lake County Coroner Jennifer Banek said paramedics transported him to Vista Medical Center East in Waukegan where he was later pronounced dead.

The Lake County Coroner’s Office will be conducting an autopsy on the victim on Monday.

The victim’s name and city of residence will be released once the autopsy has been completed and his family has been notified, Banek said.

The incident remains under investigation by the Waukegan Police Department and Lake County Coroner’s Office.
