The coroner’s office has identified a Waukegan man who was pronounced dead early Sunday morning shortly after being rescued from Lake Michigan in Waukegan.
An autopsy conducted Monday showed that Ivory Biggs, 35, of Waukegan, died of drowning, according to Lake County Coroner Jennifer Banek.
The Waukegan Fire Department and Waukegan Police Department responded around 12:00 a.m. Sunday to the Waukegan Yacht Club, 199 South Harbor Place in Waukegan, for a report of a drowning.
Witnesses reported that a man went into Lake Michigan just before midnight and had not resurfaced, according to preliminary fire department radio traffic.
Fire department divers deployed into the water and began searching for the victim.
The Mutual Aid Box Alarm System (MABAS) was activated to bring water rescue crews from fire departments throughout Lake County to the scene.
Divers located Biggs by around 12:35 a.m. Sunday.
Banek said paramedics transported him to Vista Medical Center East in Waukegan where he was later pronounced dead.
The incident remains under investigation by the Waukegan Police Department and Lake County Coroner’s Office.
