Four people were hospitalized, including three who were seriously injured and trapped, following a head-on crash on Route 31 in Prairie Grove, which is near Crystal Lake.

The Nunda Rural Fire Protection District and Prairie Grove Police Department responded around 1:56 p.m. Wednesday to Route 31 near Gracy Road in Prairie Grove.

Nunda Rural Fire Protection District Lt. Raquel Schomer said the crash involved three vehicles, including two of which collided head-on.

Firefighters arrived to find two victims in a Chrysler minivan that were trapped in their vehicle and one victim in a white pickup truck that was also trapped in their vehicle, Schomer said.

A LifeNet medical helicopter was placed on standby but did not respond due to inclement weather.

Firefighters extricated the three victims and paramedics transported them to Northwestern Medicine Hospital in McHenry in serious condition.

A fourth victim, who was the driver of a commercial truck pulling a trailer, was transported by ambulance to Advocate Good Shepherd Hospital in Barrington.

The McHenry Fire Protection District and Crystal Lake Fire Rescue Department assisted the Nunda Rural Fire Protection District at the scene.

It is unknown how the crash occurred. Prairie Grove Police Chief Lawrence Canada did not provide any information at the scene.

Route 31 was shut down by police for several hours Wednesday afternoon before being reopened by 5 p.m.

The incident remains under investigation by the Prairie Grove Police Department.
