Police say that a 5-year-old child was pronounced dead after being found unresponsive in the backyard pool of a Fox River Grove home Friday morning.

The Fox River Grove Police Department and Fox River Grove Fire Department responded around 6:35 a.m. Friday to the 1000 block of Lincoln Avenue.

Fox River Grove Police Chief Eric Waitrovich told Lake and McHenry County Scanner that authorities received a 911 call for a report of a drowning.

Officers arrived and found an unresponsive 5-year-old girl that drowned in a swimming pool in the backyard of the home, Waitrovich said.

Paramedics pronounced the 5-year-old deceased at the scene.

Waitrovich said a preliminary investigation conducted by police and the coroner’s office indicates the child’s death was a “tragic accident.”

The child was able to get out of the house around 5 a.m. without adults in the residence knowing she had walked outside, Waitrovich said.

The McHenry County Coroner’s Office is scheduling an autopsy and will release the girl’s identity after it is complete.
