A 26-year-old woman who was found dead in a vehicle at the Metra station in Crystal Lake on Sunday was shot in the head, the coroner said.

An autopsy showed that Ayanna Bennett, 26, of Chicago, died as a result of a fatal gunshot wound to the head, according to McHenry County Coroner Dr. Michael Rein.

The Crystal Lake Fire Rescue Department and Crystal Lake Police Department responded around 12:04 a.m. Sunday to Woodstock Street and Minnie Street in Crystal Lake.

Crystal Lake Police Commander Scott Miller said dispatchers received a 911 call for an unconscious subject in a vehicle.

Police officers arrived and located a female, later identified as Bennett, in a vehicle in the Metra Station parking lot off of Woodstock Street.

Paramedics quickly determined Bennett was deceased, Miller said. The McHenry County Coroner’s Office was called to the scene.

An active investigation is underway. Miller said detectives are still gathering evidence but “they are sure there is no danger to the public as a result of this incident.”

The coroner’s office did not say if they believe the death is a homicide or suicide. They are continuing to work collaboratively with the police during the investigation, Rein said.
