The coroner confirmed that a 5-year-old child who was found in the backyard pool of a Fox River Grove home last week likely died of drowning.

The Fox River Grove Police Department and Fox River Grove Fire Department responded around 6:35 a.m. Friday to the 1000 block of Lincoln Avenue.

Fox River Grove Police Chief Eric Waitrovich told Lake and McHenry County Scanner that authorities received a 911 call for a report of a drowning.

Officers arrived and found an unresponsive 5-year-old girl that drowned in a swimming pool in the backyard of the home, Waitrovich said.

Paramedics pronounced the 5-year-old deceased at the scene.

Waitrovich said a preliminary investigation conducted by police and the coroner’s office indicates the child’s death was a “tragic accident.”

The child was able to get out of the house around 5 a.m. without adults in the residence knowing she had walked outside, Waitrovich said.

McHenry County Coroner Dr. Michael Rein said his office conducted an autopsy on the child and preliminary findings show drowning as the cause of death.

Toxicology results are still pending, Rein added. The child’s name has not been publicly released by the coroner’s office.
