A 21-year-old woman died after she was found shot in a vehicle when gunfire erupted during a street fight in North Chicago Wednesday morning.
The North Chicago Police Department responded around 1:20 a.m. Wednesday to the area of 17th Street and Park Avenue in North Chicago.
Lake County Major Crime Task Force Spokesperson Heather Cognac said officers received a 911 call for shots fired and a group of people fighting in the street.
Officers arrived and located a silver 2001 Chevrolet Impala that was occupied by a 21-year-old woman who had been shot.
A man in the vehicle was attempting to render aid. The North Chicago Fire Department was called to the scene.
Cognac said the victim had a pulse and was transported by ambulance to Vista Medical Center East in Waukegan.
The 21-year-old woman died from her injuries and was pronounced around 1:55 a.m.
Cognac said officers processed the scene and evidence was located consistent with a shooting at the location.
Two vehicles and a residence in the 1700 block of Park Avenue sustained damage due to the gunfire.
The Lake County Major Crime Task Force was contacted to investigate the incident.
The investigation is ongoing and no charges have been filed yet. “However, it is believed there is no current threat to the public,” Cognac said.
