A bicyclist was cited after being struck and seriously injured by a vehicle late Monday evening near Wonder Lake, the sheriff’s office said.

The McHenry County Sheriff’s Office, Wonder Lake Fire Protection District and McHenry Township Fire Protection District responded around 11:20 p.m. Monday to the 6100 block of McCullom Lake Road in Wonder Lake for a report of a vehicle crash.

McHenry County Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman Emily Matusek said deputies were called for a crash involving a Toyota RAV4 and a bicycle.

The incident occurred on McCullom Lake Road west of Rose Ann Court.

A preliminary investigation shows the bicyclist was struck in the westbound lane of traffic after the driver of the Toyota did not see the bicyclist on the roadway, Matusek said.

A medical helicopter was initially called to respond to the area to transport the victim, identified as John Podhorsky, 60, of Crystal Lake.

The medical helicopter was canceled and Podhorsky, who suffered heavy bleeding, was transported by ambulance to Northwestern Medicine Hospital in McHenry.

Matusek said Podhorsky suffered injuries that were not life-threatening. He was issued a citation for lack of proper lighting on a bicycle.

The crash remains under investigation by the McHenry County Sheriff’s Office.
