A man and woman in their 20s were both shot after a gunman fired over a dozen shots into a vehicle that multiple people were sitting inside of Sunday evening in Waukegan.
The Waukegan Police Department and Waukegan Fire Department responded around 9:45 p.m. Sunday to the 1100 block of Sunset Terrace in Waukegan for a report of a shooting.
Waukegan Deputy Police Chief Joe Florip said officers arrived and located a woman in her 20s that had been shot and was in the front yard of a residence.
A second victim, a male in his 20s, was located a short while later in the 2200 block of North Butrick Street.
The Waukegan Police Department Criminal Investigations Division (CID) was called to investigate.
Investigators believe that the man and two women were sitting in a parked 2009 Chevrolet Impala in the area.
Florip said shots were fired into the vehicle, striking the man and one of the women. It is unclear where the shots came from or who fired them, Florip said.
The female victim resides in Waukegan and the male victim resides in North Chicago. The third passenger, a female in her 20s from Waukegan, was not injured.
Both victims were transported to an area hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
The motive for the shooting is unknown and no one is in custody, Florip said, adding that “multiple casings were recovered” but the amount and caliber of the casings are being withheld.
Over a dozen evidence markers were placed over spent casings at the scene, witnesses reported.
The shooting remains under investigation. Anyone with information is asked to call the Waukegan Police Department’s tip line at 847-360-9001.
