Authorities have identified an Elmhurst woman who was killed in a head-on crash that left another person seriously injured on Route 31 in Ringwood last weekend.

The McHenry County Sheriff’s Office and McHenry Township Fire Protection District responded around 10:24 a.m. Saturday to the area of Greenway Storage and Rental, 4408 North Route 31 in Ringwood, for a report of a vehicle crash.

McHenry County Sheriff Sgt. Aimee Knop said two vehicles, a black 2021 GMC Acadia and a white 2015 Acura TLX, were involved in the collision.

A preliminary investigation shows the GMC, driven by a 30-year-old Fort Atkinson, Wisconsin woman, was traveling northbound on Route 31.

The GMC crossed into the southbound lane of traffic for unknown reasons and struck the Acura head-on as it was traveling southbound.

Firefighters found the driver of the Acura, a 56-year-old Elmhurst woman, trapped inside the vehicle. Paramedics pronounced the woman deceased at the scene, Knop said.

McHenry County Coroner Dr. Michael Rein identified the Elmhurst woman as Christina Smith.

The driver of the GMC was transported by ambulance to Northwestern Medicine Hospital in McHenry with serious injuries.

A Lifestar medical helicopter landed at the hospital and transferred the victim to Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville for additional treatment.

Route 31 between Pioneer Road and Barnard Mill Road was closed for several hours Saturday for the investigation.

Knop said that the crash remains under investigation by the McHenry County Sheriff’s Office.
