The intersection of Fairfield Road and Monaville Road in Lake Villa will be closed later this month as construction begins on a roundabout for the intersection, county officials said.

The Lake County Division of Transportation (LCDOT) said they will be closing the intersection of Fairfield Road and Monaville Road beginning at 6 a.m. on August 30.

The closure will last approximately 90 days, according to a statement from LCDOT.

Officials say the closure is necessary to allow a contractor to construct a roundabout. The roundabout will replace the existing multi-way stop intersection.

A detour route will lead drivers down Cedar Lake Road to Route 132 and then Route 59 to Wilson Road and onto Rollins Road.

Local traffic will have access to residences and businesses from all directions within the closure area.

As part of the project, Old Monaville Road will be disconnected from Monaville Road permanently starting August 30. Local access will continue from Fairfield Road to Old Monaville Road.

The roundabout at the intersection has been in planning since at least 2016.

County officials identified numerous safety issues with the intersection during their initial talks for improvement.

Some of the issues included cars frequently running the stop signs, lack of pedestrian accommodations, and traffic cutting through on Old Monaville Road, leading to the cut-through traffic traveling at an excessive speed.
