Dozens of fire departments from Lake County and McHenry County are assisting in a large-scale search for a swimmer who went missing on the Fox Lake Friday morning.

The Fox Lake Fire Protection District responded around 10 a.m. Friday to the Fox Lake south of Crabapple Island for a report of a water rescue.

Lake County Sheriff’s Office spokesman Lt. Christopher Covelli said a man in his 20s jumped into the water from a pontoon boat.

The man did not resurface and people who were with him on the pontoon boat called 911.

Covelli said Friday afternoon that multiple fire crews remain on the scene attempting to locate the man.

The incident was elevated to a second alarm through the Mutual Aid Box Alarm System (MABAS).

The staging area for the first responders was set at Fams On the Chain, located at 112 Lakeview Avenue in Fox Lake.

The search has been ongoing for several hours and crews reportedly switched from “rescue mode” to “recovery mode.”

The Illinois Department of Conservation Police Department is leading the investigation, Covelli said.
