Authorities say a driver under the influence of drugs headbutted and injured a Lake County sheriff’s deputy during a traffic stop in Waukegan early Saturday morning.
A Lake County sheriff’s deputy conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle around 1:45 a.m. Saturday near Sunset Avenue and Lewis Avenue in Waukegan.
Lake County Sheriff’s Office spokesman Lt. Christopher Covelli said the deputy stopped the vehicle for traffic violations.
The driver, Viviana Mora, 25, of the 600 block of 2nd Street in Waukegan, was found to be driving under the influence of drugs.
The sheriff’s deputy placed Mora under arrest and placed her in the backseat of his squad car.
Covelli said that Mora became belligerent and out of control. She attempted to kick out the squad car windows and took her seatbelt off.
Sheriff’s deputies attempted to place Mora’s seatbelt back on and she headbutted one of the deputies in the face, causing minor injuries to the deputy, Covelli said.
The deputy was treated and released by paramedics.
After arriving at the Lake County Jail, Mora continued being belligerent and refused to follow the instructions of sheriff’s deputies and correctional officers.
Mora continued her combative demeanor with correctional staff and was pepper-sprayed, Covelli said.
The Lake County State’s Attorney’s Office approved charges of aggravated battery to a peace officer, resisting arrest and driving under the influence. She was also cited for numerous traffic infractions.
Mora remains held in the Lake County Jail on a $50,000 bond. She is scheduled to appear in court on Thursday.
