A 36-year-old man was pronounced dead Monday evening shortly after being rescued from Lake Michigan near the Waukegan Municipal Beach, authorities said.

The Waukegan Fire Department and Waukegan Police Department responded around 4:15 p.m. Monday to Waukegan Municipal Beach, 200 East Sea Horse Drive in Waukegan.

Waukegan Fire Department Battalion Chief Todd Zupec told Lake and McHenry County Scanner that fire department crews received a call of a water rescue.

When the fire department arrived, they discovered the victim had already been rescued from the water and was on the south pier.

Zupec said he did not know if the male victim had been rescued by police or bystanders who were at the scene.

A fire department boat took the victim to shore.

Paramedics transported the man to Vista Medical Center East in Waukegan where he was pronounced dead, Zupec said. No one else was injured in the incident.

Lake County Coroner Jennifer Banek identified the victim as Noel Hernandez, 36, of Mount Prospect.

Banek said that Hernandez was pronounced dead at the hospital approximately one hour after the initial 911 call.

An autopsy performed on Hernandez indicated his death was the result of drowning.

The incident remains under investigation by the Waukegan Police Department and Lake County Coroner’s Office.
