Police are seeking to identify the driver of a semi-truck that struck a motorcycle and drove away Monday afternoon, causing the motorcyclist to sustain critical injuries near Wadsworth.

The Lake County Sheriff’s Office and Newport Township Fire Protection District responded around 4:00 p.m. Monday to West Russell Road and Kilbourne Road in Newport Township for a report of a hit-and-run crash with injuries involving a motorcycle.

Sheriff’s deputies arrived and located a 74-year-old Winthrop Harbor man with major injuries, according to Lake County Sheriff’s Office spokesman Lt. Christopher Covelli.

The man was driving a 2007 Yamaha motorcycle, Covelli said. He was reportedly unconscious, according to fire department radio traffic.

A preliminary investigation shows the motorcyclist was traveling westbound on Russell Road and was making a right turn onto northbound Kilbourne Road, Covelli said.

At the same time, a semi-truck pulling a trailer was traveling southbound on Kilbourne Road and was making a right turn onto westbound Russell Road.

Covelli said the driver of the semi-truck made a wide right turn, which caused the trailer to enter the northbound lanes of Kilbourne Road.

The driver of the Yamaha then struck the trailer. The semi-truck continued traveling westbound on Russell Road.

Paramedics transported the man to Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville with critical injuries.

Sheriff’s crash investigators responded to the scene and conducted an investigation.

They are asking anyone with video surveillance of the crash or the semi-truck to call the sheriff’s office at 847-377-4000.

The crash remains under investigation by the Lake County Sheriffโ€™s Office Technical Crash Investigations Unit.
