The coroner has identified two men in their 20s who were killed following a drive-by shooting in North Chicago on Saturday.

Lake County Coroner Jennifer Banek said that an autopsy showed Navor Benitez, 24, and David Fajardo, 25, both of North Chicago, died from multiple gunshot wounds.

The North Chicago Police Department responded around 3:30 a.m. Saturday to the 1000 block of Lincoln Street in North Chicago.

Lake County Major Crime Task Force Spokesman Christopher Covelli said officers responded to a report of a shooting in an alleyway.

Officers arrived and found Benitez and Fajardo shot. The North Chicago Fire Department was called to the scene.

Benitez was pronounced dead at the scene. Fajardo was transported by ambulance to an area hospital where he was later pronounced dead.

The North Chicago Police Department requested the assistance of the Lake County Major Crime Task Force. The Lake County Coroner’s Office responded to both the scene and the hospital.

A preliminary investigation shows both of the victims were outside in the alleyway.

An unknown vehicle drove into the alleyway and at least one of the occupants of the vehicle fired multiple shots toward the victims, striking them both, Covelli said.

Major Crime Task Force investigators and evidence technicians continue working with the North Chicago Police Department to investigate the incident.
