An elderly man walking on the side of a residential street was struck and killed by a garbage truck Wednesday morning in Spring Grove, police said.
The Spring Grove Police Department and Spring Grove Fire Protection District responded around 7:28 a.m. Wednesday to Michigan Drive and Huron Drive.
Spring Grove Police Chief Michael Niedzwiecki said officers received a call for a pedestrian struck by a garbage truck.
An initial investigation determined an elderly male was walking near the pavement edge on Huron Drive when he was struck by the truck, Niedzwiecki said.
A LifeNet medical helicopter was requested to the scene but it was canceled due to the victim’s condition.
An ambulance transported the man by ground to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead.
The Major Crash Assistance Team (MCAT), which consists of members from the Cary, Harvard, Johnsburg, McHenry, Spring Grove, and Woodstock police departments, was activated to assist with the crash investigation.
The Illinois State Police also assisted in a portion of the investigation.
Niedzwiecki said no citations have been issued at this time pending the completion of the investigation.
